The Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD) is now accepting nominations for volunteer positions on the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (JEDIC).
Value Statement
The Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD) believes that diversity with respect to race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identities and expressions, and disabilities is vital to advancing pulmonary, critical care, and pulmonary critical care fellowship education and the next generation of clinicians and medical educators.
Committee Charge
The JEDIC is a standing committee of the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors. The mission of the JEDIC is to promote the advancement of equitable, anti-racist, and anti-discrimination practices in all APCCMPD efforts by working in partnership with the Board of Directors (BOD) and other committees of the APCCMPD. The committee promotes the goals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion among the community of pulmonary, critical care, and pulmonary critical care fellowship programs. Through myriad endeavors, including creation of educational resources and tools, production of sessions at the annual conference, and outreach endeavors including blog posts and podcasts, the JEDIC aims to create a sustainable culture for equitable practices and to inspire necessary changes for fellowship educators.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Promote JEDIC principles within the APCCMPD as a professional association, advising the BOD on organizational strengths, challenges, and progress.
- Collaborate with other APCCMPD committees to spearhead resources that advance justice, equity, diversity and inclusion within fellowship programs and medical education.
- Assess membership needs and facilitate communication across constituencies to develop strategies for achieving JEDIC goals.
- Interface with external stakeholders to maximize JEDIC resources and alignment for fellowship programs and educators.
Composition
The JEDIC, when fully constituted, shall have no fewer than six members-at-large. Each member shall be a current or former Training Program Director, Associate Program Director, serve as Faculty, Program Coordinator, or Fellow within an APCCMPD member program.
Once constituted, vacant seats shall be filled by a nomination process from within the APCCMPD membership. Upon a vacancy, the remaining JEDIC members will determine which content areas require expertise.
JEDIC Members: shall serve an initial 1-year term and be eligible for annual reappointment of up to three additional 1-year terms, for a total of four years. JEDIC members will be notified, in writing, of completion of their service to the committee.
Chair: The Chair shall serve an initial 1-year term independent from any term served as a member of the committee. The Chair is eligible for reappointment of three additional 1-year terms, for a total of 4-years, pending approval of the BOD. The Chair serves as liaison between the full committee and BOD.
Vice-Chair: The BOD will initially appoint a Vice-Chair. Once convened, the Vice-Chair shall be recommended by the Chair from among JEDIC members who have served for at least one year. At termination of the Chair’s term, the Vice-Chair shall assume the position of Chair, pending approval of the BOD. In the Chair’s absence, the Vice-Chair will serve as Chair.
Immediate Past Chair: The Immediate Past Chair can serve in an Ex-officio capacity for two years.
The BOD will initially appoint the following position. Once convened, this position shall be recommended by the Chair from among the JEDIC members who have served for at least one year.
- The JEDIC Social Media Committee (SMC) Liaison serves as a bridge between the JEDIC and SMC. The liaison ensures effective communication and collaboration among the JEDIC, SMC, and APCCMPD.
Responsibilities include:
- Facilitating Communication: Serves as JEDIC's primary contact, ensuring clear and timely requests and exchanges of information.
- Representing Interests: Communicates the needs and priorities of the JEDIC to the SMC.
- Coordinating Posts: Shares updates and ensures alignment on goals, timelines, and responsibilities.
- Reporting: Updates the JEDIC during bi-monthly meetings on social media related items. Also updates SMC on upcoming needs and events.
- Meeting: Attends SMC meetings on an ad hoc basis.
Eligibility Criteria for the Position of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee Member
- All applicants must be a current or former Training Program Director, Associate Program Director, serve as Faculty, Program Coordinator, or Fellow within an APCCMPD member program.
Attendance and Participation Policy
- JEDIC meetings will be held, as needed, on a quarterly basis.
- JEDIC members will be expected to attend two-thirds of the scheduled JEDIC teleconferences each year.
- In the event that a JEDIC member is unable to participate in a scheduled meeting/ teleconference, they are expected to notify APCCMPD staff prior to the meeting.
- If a JEDIC member fails to meet the attendance requirements of the committee, the Chair will contact the member directly to discuss resolutions to satisfy the committee member’s responsibilities. If the JEDIC member continues to fail to meet the attendance requirements, the member may be asked to step down from the committee. Requesting the committee member to step down is at the discretion of the JEDIC Chair and Vice-Chair.
Nomination Process
JEDIC vacancies shall be filled in the following manner:
- In each election year, a Call for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee Nominations will be sent to all active members of the APCCMPD.
- The Chair and Vice-Chair shall review all JEDIC members to ensure they meet the qualifications.
- The sitting members of the JEDIC shall vote on the eligible applicants. Those with the highest number of votes shall be selected for nomination. If a tie vote occurs for the last member of the committee, the Chair may cast a deciding vote. Final appointments to the committee will be made by the APCCMPD BOD.
