NOMINATION DEADLINE: MARCH 31, 2025 

The Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD) is now accepting nominations for volunteer positions on the Education Committee (EC).

Educational Value Statement

The APCCMPD is recognized for its quality and excellence in advancing medical education as a profession. APCCMPD is valued as the first choice for professional development among current and prospective GME leaders in the fields of pulmonary, critical care, and/or pulmonary critical care medicine. Through the APCCMPD, member programs develop trained leadership and staff needed to facilitate excellence in the next generation of physicians.

Committee Charge

The APCCMPD Education Committee (EC) will ensure the quality and relevancy of content and curriculum within the education website. The EC will ensure that the structure and content of the APCCMPD education website are closely aligned with APCCMPD strategic priorities and responsive to the diverse needs and capabilities of APCCMPD members.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assesses faculty development interests and needs.
  • Plan and implement educational activities that support APCCMPD member faculty development interests and needs and allows for monitoring and tracking of faculty development activities to satisfy ACGME Program Requirement V.C.2.b.
  • Establish a specific agenda, which includes 10 educational activities that are launched within the education website annually.
  • Set expectations regarding each educational activity’s objectives and method of delivery.
  • Consult and coordinate, as needed, with other members who may also be responsible for designing and developing the educational activities featured on the APCCMPD education website.
  • Along with the Board of Directors (BOD), review educational content developed for the website.
  • Review and evaluate the educational content for uptake, relevancy, and completeness.
  • Facilitate communication with members-at-large.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and guidance on the education website functionality.
  • Regularly report to the BOD on the progress of the education website and its educational activities.

Composition

The EC, when fully constituted, shall have no fewer than five members-at-large. Each member shall be a current or former Training Program Director, Associate Program Director, or serve as faculty within a graduate or undergraduate medicine program. 

Once constituted, vacant seats shall be filled by a nomination process from within the APCCMPD membership. Upon a vacancy, the remaining EC members will determine which content areas require expertise.

EC Members: shall serve a 1-year term and be eligible for annual reappointment of up to three additional 1-year terms, for a total of four years. EC members will be notified, in writing, of completion of their service to the committee.

Chair: The Chair shall serve a 2-year term independent from any term served as a member of the committee. The Chair is eligible for reappointment every two years, for up to two 2-year terms, pending approval of the BOD. The Chair serves as liaison between the full committee and BOD.

Vice-Chair: The BOD will initially appoint a Vice-Chair. Once convened, the Vice-Chair shall be recommended by the Chair from among EC members who have served for at least one year. At termination of the Chair’s term, the Vice-Chair shall assume the position of Chair, pending approval of the BOD. In the Chair’s absence, the Vice-Chair will serve as Chair.

Immediate Past Chair: The Immediate Past Chair can serve in an Ex-officio capacity for two years. 

The BOD will initially appoint the following positions. Once convened, these positionsshall be recommended by the Chair from among EC members who have served for at least one year.

  • The Editor-in-Chief of the Voices in #MedEd Blog.The Editor-in-Chief will oversee the APCCMPDScholars Thought Leaders Blog, curate and evaluate blog content, and identify blog contributors.
  • The Toolkit Chair of the APCCMPDScholars Toolkit. The Toolkit Chair will oversee the maintenance of the APCCMPDScholars Toolkit through the identification of areas in need of additional resources and appropriately categorize resources.

An Executive Committee, comprised of the Chair, Vice-Chair, Editor-in-Chief of the Voices in #MedEd Blog, Podcast Chair, and Toolkit Chair, shall be convened and are authorized to meet and act between committee meetings when it is impractical to get the full committee together. The Executive Committee also serves as an advisor to the APCCMPD staff.

Eligibility Criteria for the Position of Education Committee Member

  • Be a current or former Training Program Director, Associate Program Director, or serve as faculty within a graduate or undergraduate medicine program.
  • Serve as faculty within a medical school or equivalent.
  • It is preferred that the EC appointee possess one or more of the following qualifications:
    • Has knowledge of adult learning principles.
    • Has expertise in content areas covered by faculty in pulmonary, critical care and/or pulmonary critical care medicine fellowship programs. 
    • Understands how to use technology to enhance learning in the GME setting.
    • Has developed, or has an interest in creating, assessment tools and other resources that can be implemented in pulmonary, critical care and/or pulmonary critical care medicine fellowship programs.
    • Is currently employed within an APCCMPD member program.

Attendance and Participation Policy

  • EC meetings will be held monthly, as needed.
  • EC members will be expected to attend two-thirds of the scheduled EC teleconferences each year. 
  • If an EC member is unable to participate in a scheduled meeting/teleconference, they are expected to notify EC staff prior to the meeting.
  • If an EC member fails to meet the attendance requirements, the Chair will contact the member directly to discuss resolutions to satisfy the committee member’s responsibilities. If the EC member continues to fail to meet the attendance requirements, the member may be asked to step down from the committee. Requesting the committee member to step down is at the discretion of the EC Chair and Vice-Chair.

Nomination Process

Education Committee vacancies shall be filled in the following manner:

  • In each election year, a Call for Education Committee Nominations will be sent to all active members of the APCCMPD.
  • The Chair and Vice-Chair shall review all EC members to ensure they meet the qualifications.
  • The sitting members of the Education Committee shall vote on the eligible applicants. Those with the highest number of votes shall vote on the eligible applicants. Those with the highest number of votes shall be selected for nomination. If a tie vote occurs for the last member of the committee, the Chair may cast the deciding vote. Final appointments to the Education Committee will be made by the APCCMPD BOD.

Required Nomination Material to be Submitted for the Education Committee

  • Up-to-date Biosketch or CV
  • Completed Online Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form (view APCCMPD Leadership COI Policy)
  • Statement of Commitment and Purpose describing their:
    • History of work in GME as related to the required qualifications.
    • Commitment to the goals of the APCCMPD.
    • Statement of willingness to participate in all face-to-face meetings and spend up to 1-2 hours/month on committee work.
