The Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD) is now accepting nominations for volunteer positions on the Fellows-in-Training Committee.
Committee Charge
The APCCMPD Fellows-in-Training Committee (FITC) provides a unique Fellow perspective to the APCCMPD Board of Directors (BOD). They develop and recommend to the BOD the annual fellowship survey for circulation to pulmonary, critical care, and/or pulmonary critical care medicine fellowship programs, medical education-related content on behalf of the APCCMPD, and advance the field of medical education and fellowship training by disseminating BOD-approved survey results at the APCCMPD Annual Conference and Bi-annual member meetings held in conjunction with ATS and CHEST.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide a unique Fellow perspective to the APCCMPD Board of Directors (BOD).
- Develop and recommend to the BOD the annual fellowship survey for circulation to pulmonary, critical care, and/or pulmonary critical care medicine fellowship programs.
- Develop and recommend to the BOD medical education-related content on behalf of the APCCMPD at both CHEST and ATS.
- Advance the field of medical education and fellowship training by disseminating survey results at the APCCMPD Annual Conference and Bi-annual member meetings held in conjunction with ATS and CHEST, as approved by the BOD.
Composition
The FITC, when fully constituted, shall have up to 19 members. Each member shall be an active Fellow of an APCCMPD member program with an interest in medical education.
Once constituted, the Chair of the FITC will make a recommendation to the BOD on the reappoint of FITC members for a second term. Recommendation to reappoint a member for their second term will be contingent upon participation in year one.
FITC Members: Shall serve up to two 1-year terms. The term will commence in July, following the start of the new FIT on the APCCMPD BOD term. There may not be more than one fellow from one institution serving on the committee.
Chair: The Fellow-in-Training (FIT) on the APCCMPD BOD shall Chair the FITC. The Chair shall serve a 2-year term concurrent with their position as FIT on the APCCMPD BOD.
Eligibility Criteria for the Position of Fellow-in-Training Committee Member
- All applicants must be in their 2nd- or 3rd-year of fellowship so that they can complete at least one 1-year term. The APCCMPD BOD will review each nomination and select nominees to fill the vacant seats.
Attendance and Participation Policy
- The FITC will convene by conference call on an ad hoc basis, in proximity to the important dates identified below. Committee members are expected to participate in two-thirds of all the calls and meetings. FITC members are also expected to participate in all preparatory work associated with FITC projects.
- If an FITC member fails to meet the attendance or participation requirements, the Chair will contact the member directly to discuss resolutions to satisfy the FITC member’s responsibilities. If the FITC member continues to fail to meet the attendance or participation requirements, the member may be asked to step down from the FITC. Requesting the FITC member to step down is at the discretion of the FITC Chair.
Important Dates
- November: prepare CHEST submission, if intended
- November-December: discuss survey topics, prepare survey draft
- January: pilot test survey, send to BOD for review and be ready to send out survey by end of January
- February-March: review survey results, Fellow on the BOD will present at March APCCMPD Business Meeting

Nomination Process
FITC vacancies shall be filled in the following manner:
- In each election year, a Call for Fellows-in-Training Committee Nominations will be sent to all active members of the APCCMPD.
- Fellows who were nominated for the FIT position on the BOD but did not get elected to serve will be evaluated and invited to participate on the FITC.
- Current BOD members can appoint a Fellow with an interest in medical education from their program to participate on the FITC. APCCMPD TPD members who wish to nominate a Fellow for the FITC should first obtain the approval of the prospective nominee.
- The APCCMPD BOD will review each nomination and select nominees to fill the vacant seats.
Required Nomination Material to be Submitted for the Fellow-in-Training Committee
1. Upload one single PDF file that includes:
- Completed Nomination Cover page (download here)
- Up-to-date Biosketch or CV
- Statement of Commitment and Purpose describing their:
- Commitment to the goals of the APCCMPD and interest in defining and supporting the education and training of pulmonary, critical care, and/or pulmonary critical care medicine Program Directors and Fellows.
- Statement of willingness to participate in FITC projects, similar to those specified above, and to spend an average of one hour per month on FITC work and calls.
- Letter of Support from the Program Director that specifies the Fellow will be given time to participate on the FITC.
- Date of Fellowship Completion: All candidates should be in their their 2nd- or 3rd-year of fellowship so that they can complete at least one 1-year term.
