Position Overview

The Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the development, implementation, and ongoing management of the APCCMPD Medical Educator Research Hub. This role is critical to advancing APCCMPD’s mission by leveraging data, analytics, and emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence—to enhance medical education research, assessment quality, and member value. The CMIO will serve as the primary steward of the centralized data and analytics platform, ensuring secure, compliant, and innovative use of educational and survey data to support research, benchmarking, and quality improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of the Medical Educator Research Hub, a secure, centralized data and analytics infrastructure integrating in-service exam data, survey data, membership information, and benchmarking studies.
  • Oversee data governance, privacy, and security protocols, ensuring HIPAA compliance and role-based access controls to protect member and program data.
  • Collaborate with APCCMPD leadership, committees, and external partners to establish policies for data access, proposal review, IRB considerations, and intellectual property ownership.
  • Drive the integration of AI-enabled tools for in-service exam question generation and evaluation, managing the research lifecycle from prototype development through validation and operational deployment.
  • Facilitate member engagement by enabling controlled research access to de-identified datasets within a virtual analysis environment, promoting longitudinal research and quality improvement.
  • Manage vendor relationships and technology partnerships, including cloud hosting providers and AI infrastructure vendors, to ensure cost-effective and scalable solutions.
  • Provide expert guidance on emerging medical informatics trends and technologies to inform APCCMPD’s strategic digital ecosystem development.
  • Lead or participate in task forces and working groups focused on legal, ethical, operational, and technical aspects of data sharing and AI use.
  • Report regularly to the Board of Directors and strategic planning committees on progress, challenges, and opportunities related to the Research Hub.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Medicine, Medical Informatics, Health Informatics, Data Science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical education, clinical informatics, or health data management.
  • Proven track record leading complex data platform projects, preferably in academic or professional medical education settings.
  • Expertise in data governance, HIPAA compliance, and secure cloud-based data infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with AI applications in medical education or assessment development is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into actionable strategies aligned with organizational goals.

  • Experience working with professional medical societies or certification boards.
  • Knowledge of psychometric principles and assessment methodologies.

Time Commitment and Structure

  • Commitment: Minimum 20 hours per month
  • Accountability: Monthly progress reports and quarterly deliverable assessments required
  • Term: 1 year contract, renewable with approval of the APCCMPD BOD.
  • Focus: Deliverable-based outcomes rather than hourly requirements

Position Evolution

This role is designed to evolve over 2-3 years, with expectations for:
  • Continuous adaptation to emerging educational technologies and funding landscapes with integrated approach.
  • Expansion of scope based on successful content-funding integration and acquisition success.
  • Strategic planning for next-term role evolution based on integrated content development and funding achievements.

Compensation

10% FTE or up to $38,000, whichever is less, will be provided. This compensation is not intended to cover other expenses including direct and in-direct expenses and benefits.
