PRE-COURSE: 2027 FLIGHT Academy: Fellowship and GME Leadership Training

Description
This comprehensive course is designed for fellowship Program Directors, Associate Program Directors, Faculty, and Fellows who aspire to lead in graduate medical education. This year's course centers on leading organizational change and developing the next generation of physician and GME leaders.

A Keynote and large-group workshop open the day, followed by small-group workshops on career narratives and professional identity formation, academic advancement and promotion, building an academic niche, and program director succession. A dedicated fellows' workshop addresses the move from fellowship to faculty, and the day closes with a participant-driven panel on real-world program leadership challenges.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply principles of organizational change to lead program-level improvement and develop leadership skills in future physician and GME leaders.
  2. Analyze their own career narratives and use narrative-based strategies to support professional identity formation and mentorship.

  5. Plan for program director transitions using structured approaches to leadership succession and knowledge transfer.
  6. Navigate the transition from fellowship to faculty, including the academic job search, offer evaluation, and visa considerations.
  7. Engage with experienced program leaders to identify practical solutions to common program leadership challenges.

POST-COURSE: The Program Director's AI Workflow: From Scheduling to the Annual Program Evaluation

Description

This hands-on workshop shows fellowship program leaders how to use AI to reduce the recurring administrative work of running a fellowship while keeping program director judgment, oversight, and accountability central. Rather than surveying general productivity tools, the course follows the fellowship administrative cycle: scheduling, rotation evaluations, milestone mapping, CCC preparation, the Annual Program Evaluation, and strategic planning.

Assessment is a central thread. Participants will learn to shorten rotation evaluations to what each rotation can genuinely observe, map items to EPAs and milestones once, and use AI to organize evidence for the CCC, while program leadership verifies the evidence and makes every assessment decision.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe what AI can and cannot do safely in fellowship administration, including privacy, governance, and institutional approval requirements.
  2. Build and revise fellowship schedules around rotation requirements, vacation, call, equity, and coverage constraints.
  3. Redesign rotation-specific evaluations and map evaluation items to EPAs, sub competencies, and milestones.
  4. Synthesize assessment data into CCC summaries and fellow letters, with program leadership verifying evidence and decisions.
  5. Convert Annual Program Evaluation inputs into a SWOT analysis and a prioritized improvement plan.
  6. Build a first AI-enabled administrative workflow for use at their home program.

Targeted Learners
This program is targeted towards fellowship and graduate medical education leaders who are serving or aspire to serve in medical education leadership, including participation in the administration of a fellowship program.

  • Fellowship Program Directors and Associate Program Directors
  • Core Faculty with Program Administration Roles
  • Program Coordinators
