The University of Pennsylvania Lung Transplant Program is seeking applicants for our one-year fellowship in Advanced Lung Disease/Lung Transplantation. The position will begin July 1, 2027 and extend through June 30, 2028.

Overview

The fellowship goals are to develop the skills required to become an attending transplant pulmonologist, to provide a comprehensive outpatient experience in advanced lung disease subspecialty clinics, and to engage in a scholarly pursuit related to lung transplantation or advanced lung disease.

Objectives

Fellows will work with a multidisciplinary team of pulmonologists, surgeons, and transplant-trained advance practitioners, nurse coordinators, pharmacists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, social workers, and nutritionists in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Complementing an active role in the clinical services of one of the busiest and well-established lung transplant programs in the country, the fellow will receive high-level training through educational opportunities including:

  • Understanding patient selection criteria through participation in lung selection meetings.
  • Post-operative ICU management of the lung transplant patient, including patients requiring ECMO.
  • Post-transplant bronchoscopy, including exposure to advanced bronchoscopic techniques.
  • Medical assessment and management of the potential organ donor.
  • Outpatient care of long-term transplant recipients.

Graduates of the fellowship have gone on to transplant pulmonology positions at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio State University, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and New York University, among others.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants are expected to have completed a pulmonary and critical care fellowship by July 2027 in an accredited program. The Penn Lung Transplant fellowship is able to sponsor J1 visas on a case-by-case basis.
