2027-2028 Lung Transplant Fellowship
University of Florida Gainesville, FL
Looking for the next University of Florida Lung Transplant Fellow!
The University of Florida (UF) is currently interviewing for our 2027–2028 Lung Transplant Fellowship. UF has a high-volume and rapidly growing lung transplant program—we have already performed 62 lung transplants in 2026. Our team includes 8 transplant pulmonologists, 2 transplant surgeons, and 8 advanced practice providers, giving our fellow exposure to a broad range of faculty expertise while remaining an integral part of the transplant team.
This is a truly hands-on fellowship. Our fellows:
- Perform 100+ transbronchial biopsies during the year
- Participate in donor call and donor selection
- Present candidates at multidisciplinary selection committee
- Develop expertise across the entire transplant continuum—from advanced lung disease evaluation and listing through perioperative/ICU management, immunosuppression, infection, rejection, CLAD, and long-term care
- Gain significant experience with complex transplant candidates and recipients, including ECMO
- Participate in a formalized curriculum with dedicated lung transplant didactics
- Work toward meeting requirements for UNOS Lung Transplant Medical Director certification
- And importantly—there is no overnight call!!!!
But technical training is only part of what we want our fellows to leave UF with.
We place a major emphasis on mentorship, scholarship, networking, and career development. Our fellows have opportunities to participate in research and national/international transplant education, including engagement with the International Lung Transplant Fellows Collaborative, which I co-chair.
We are also extremely proud of what happens after fellowship: we have had 100% placement of our graduates, including positions at several of the leading lung transplant programs in the country. We work closely with each fellow throughout the year to help them identify and secure the position that fits their career goals.
And then there is Gainesville. The weather is pretty spectacular for about nine months of the year—and for the other three, Florida invented pools, beaches, and air conditioning for a reason. Gainesville has a great food scene, an affordable cost of living, easy access to Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa and the Florida coasts, and SEC sports and game-day energy that are hard to beat.
If you are a fellow considering a career in lung transplantation—or you know someone who should be—I would love to talk! Informal conversations are very welcome.
Thank you very much for assisting us with our search for our next fellow!
